Connecting AWL with the Community
Through a variety of community support initiatives, AWL provides its members opportunities to serve the community, connect with other members, and develop leadership skills through its Community Support Committee. We want ideas from membership about the types of events and efforts that you will participate in and support. We also need AWL members to step-up and get involved with our community support efforts. If you are interested in joining the Community Support Committee, have a charitable cause or idea that aligns with AWL’s mission, or want to financially support our efforts as an event sponsor, please contact Betsy Lynch, the Community Support Chair, at firstname.lastname@example.org. ! We typically set the annual community support calendar by January of the current year, but continue to add events and plan for the next year so it is never too late to bring us your ideas.
Annually, many AWL members volunteer as a group to support events and workdays for many worthy causes. We typically kick-off the year by hosting Read Across America at multiple locations in March. In April, we participate with the legal community’s Food from the Bar efforts. The event raises food and cash donations for Harvesters – The Community Food Network. In June, the AWL Power Walk team participates in a 5k run/walk that benefits Dress for Success Kansas City. In addition to coordinating the AWL team, members also serve on the organization’s planning committee for the event, raising donations, door prizes, and working the event set-up. Most years we also host a build event with Heartland Habitat for Humanity. We have also hosted special social media driven events for the National Wear Red Day for the American Heart Association and coordinated a Pay It Forward movement by hosting The Great Kindness Challenge: AWL Edition, benefiting Lucy’s Kids for Peace.
