Generative AI has arrived in the attorney-client relationship from both directions: clients are using it before they call us, and many of us are now using it on their matters. This session addresses both and the ways they collide. This CLE addresses what AI use does to a client's legal rights (human authorship requirements, inadvertent public disclosure, and attorney-client privilege risks), what ethical issues the attorney must consider, and the practical realities of representing clients who use generative AI — where producing critique of a legal strategy or document has become nearly free while answering it still costs an hourly rate.

Jaclyn Alcantara, Hovey Williams
As an intellectual property attorney specializing in patents and trademarks, Jaclyn is passionate about protecting her clients' brands and innovations. Her practice focuses on patent prosecution, trademark and copyright registration, intellectual property (IP) due diligence, IP licensing, and IP client counseling, with a particular emphasis on clients in aerospace and composite part manufacturing. Drawing on her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, Jaclyn also represents clients in a variety of electrical and mechanical industries (e.g., audio, agricultural equipment, medical devices, and factory robotics). She shapes comprehensive IP strategies for international corporations, start-ups, regional companies, and solo inventors, taking into consideration the unique goals and challenges they each face.
Jaclyn was a patent agent for over a decade before attending law school at UMKC School of Law, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2019. She was named on the Missouri Lawyers Media 2025 Up & Coming list and has recently appeared in episodes of the popular docuseries Make48 on Roku’s This Old House Maker’s Channel, where she lends her patent expertise to teams competing in a 48-hour invention competition. Jaclyn is a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and a board member for the Association for Women Attorneys (AWL) in Kansas City and has written articles for Above the Law, Ingram's Magazine, and the UMKC Law Review.
