AWL Stepping Up for Women
This annual AWL warrant relief event is designed to assist women who are victims of domestic violence to resolve outstanding speeding, traffic, and parking tickets.
Step Up provides free legal assistance to the women and enables them to resolve outstanding Municipal Court warrants and charges that could create problems with obtaining employment, housing and social service benefits. Many housing facilities and jobs perform background checks to see if people have warrants, and if they do, the women with warrants become ineligible. Disposing of these outstanding charges helps the women access much needed services.
In exchange for probation and community service, many women are able to address speeding and parking tickets that will plague them for years. The program also partners with Connections to Success, a local nonprofit, to offer classes to Step Up participants on building a life plan and job-seeking skills such as interview attire and resume preparation. The classes are completed as a condition of probation.
AWL volunteers act as defense counsel, Stepping Up for Women, for the day to the women who seek assistance through the relief program. Training is provided the day of the event; ALL volunteers are WELCOMED!
