  Join us for Moms and the Law, a CLE program designed to explore the unique challenges and opportunities of practicing law while raising children. This session will cover legal protections, ethical obligations, and strategies to support overall well-being as a parent in the legal profession. Gain practical insights from presenters Amy Jackson (Siro Smith Dickson) and Lauren Fields (Roth Davies, LLC) as they share their expertise and experiences.

  Join us as we explore the legal and political contours of Missouri’s redistricting battles. The program traces the history of gerrymandering from its origins to the present, highlighting how the drawing of district lines shapes political power and representation. Attendees will learn about the constitutional and statutory framework governing redistricting, recent efforts to overturn Missouri’s current maps, and the legal tools available to challenge partisan gerrymanders.

  Aimee Gromowsky will explain Missouri’s unique initiative and referendum process and how citizen-led petitions continue to play a crucial role in shaping election law. Gillian Wilcox of the ACLU of Missouri will discuss the recent litigation challenging the 2025 redistricting plan and its broader implications. Together, the speakers will provide practical and historical insight into how law, politics, and public engagement intersect every time the lines are redrawn.

• AWL CLE: The Jury is Still Out: Using Jury Instructions in Trial and Beyond

  Jury instructions are not just for trial anymore! Join the Hon. Joel P. Fahnestock as she demystifies Missouri’s Approved Jury Instructions (MAI). Judge Fahnestock will walk through preparing jury instructions for criminal and civil trials using MAI as well as addressing the ways jury instructions can be used to inform pretrial preparation and settlement discussions.
  
  

  Hon. Joel P. Fahnestock - Judge Joel P. Fahnestock currently serves as a Circuit Judge in Division 9 of the 16th Judicial Circuit (Jackson County, Missouri), with assignment to criminal matters. She was appointed to the bench in 2009.

  Prior to her appointment, Judge Fahnestock built a distinguished legal career: after earning her J.D. from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law (where she served as note editor of the Law Review and competed on the trial team) she clerked for Scott O. Wright (U.S. District Judge), then served in private practice (at firms including Rouse, Hendricks, German, May & Shank and Shank, Laue & Hamilton), worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Jackson County’s Drug Unit, and ultimately served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division. With her depth of trial, appellate, and prosecutorial experience—coupled with a strong foundation in legal scholarship—Judge Fahnestock brings a well-rounded perspective to her courtroom and to sessions such as this one on jury instructions and case-strategy.
